Welcome to Languages department of Islay High School. Students in S1 and S2 will have the opportunity to learn both French and Gaelic. Gàidhlig medium students will continue with their studies as well as also learning French. In S1 and S2 the focus is on building confidence in the skills needed to be a successful linguist: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The department uses a range of innovative online learning tools to aid learning, students at home can access these. Speaking another language helps you to get to know another people and culture, as language and culture go hand in hand.

Broad General Education

   BGE Students have four periods a week in the department within which they will cover selected outcomes for BGE French and Gaelic. Native Speakers will have two periods a week of dedicated Gàidhlig.
   All students studying Gàidhlig, both learners and native speakers are offered opportunities to engage with Gàidhlig outside of the classroom, for example by choosing to take part in Film G. For native speakers and older leaners, there is also Spòrs Gàidhlig.
   The aim, by the end of second year, is to equip students will the skills they need to continue the subjects onto the senior phase.
   Once students have completed their BGE course they have the option of further study within the department in the courses below.
