Course Content

National 5

For pupils with an aptitude and interest in physics, we offer the National 5 course.  This course is assessed through a practical-based assignment worth 20% of the final marks, and an end of year exam which accounts for the other 80%.  It is graded A-D.

In common with other National 5 level courses, pupils must pass a prelim exam in January in order to be presented for the final exam.  For those struggling with those demands, there is the option of presentation at National 4 level.  This path is chosen in consultation with pupils and parents, and requires the passing of all units and the added value assignment (similar to National 4 Science).

Where can my parents find out more?

Your school will give your parents an Options or Choices information booklet, which has detailed information on the curriculum and the individual subjects or courses you can study. It will also invite them along to a Parents’ Information Evening.

Higher

The entry requirement for this course is an A or B at National 5 physics.

As with other Higher courses in the sciences, it is strongly recommended that candidates have or are studying for National 5 maths, as there is a significant numeracy requirement for successful problem solving.

There is once again a coursework component for the programme of study taking the form of a practical-based assignment.  This carries just over 20% of the course marks, with the remainder being supplied by the end of year exam.  The final certificate is graded A-D.

Presentation for the final exam is dependent on a pass in the January prelim following discussion and consultation with pupil and parents.
