Mathematics

Welcome

Mathematics is important in everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives. Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.

Broad General Education

The Mathematics course for pupils in S1 and S2 is based on the Curriculum for Excellence outcomes.
Pupils will typically focus on 3rd Level outcomes in S1 with continued exposure and reinforcement of 2nd Level outcomes as required. Throughout S1 and S2, pupils will gain increased exposure to 4th level concepts.
Pupils will work in mixed ability classes in S1 then be in set classes in S2 as they prepare for the Senior Phase.
Teachers use a range of differentiated resources to ensure every pupil is both challenged and supported.

Application of Mathematics

Applications of Mathematics brings mathematics into the real world. Learners develop knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable them to apply mathematical ideas and strategies in real-life situations. These include managing finances, statistics, data and probability, geometry and measurement.

Mathematics

Mathematics is rich and stimulating and develops logical reasoning, analysis, problem solving skills, creativity and the ability to think in abstract ways. These are skills which are not only sought after by employers in today’s global economy, but are also essential life skills.

Learning mathematics gives young people access to the wider curriculum and the opportunity to pursue further studies which may lead to careers in fields including science, technology and engineering. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.
